The Garden Island hears from critics on a regular basis who disagree with our news coverage, editorials or format changes.
These critics come from all walks of life and hold viewpoints ranging from liberal to conservative. But they all share one common thread: On a particular day, in a particular story, our news coverage did not dovetail with their personal opinion.
We are not in the business of pleasing everyone, every day. Our mission is to provide balanced news coverage, pinpoint the ramifications national events have on our community, and record Kaua’i happenings accurately, all while delivering it in a timely basis. We are constantly striving to meet this goal and help our community assess events which impact our lives, thereby affecting positive change on Kaua’i.
We welcome constructive criticism. Over the years, we have adopted many of our readers’ suggestions and made significant changes in the manner in which we present local and world news.
Tomorrow, we take the next big step in our ongoing effort to serve the community which is also our home. After 99 years as an afternoon publication (except for our more recent weekend morning editions), The Garden Island is becoming a morning paper that will be delivered to subscribers’ homes by 6 a.m. daily.
Instead of reading the day’s headlines after work, subscribers will now be able to find out what’s happening on Kaua’i and around the world while sipping their morning coffee.
For several months, there have been behind-the-scenes preparations by The Garden Island’s 60 staff members and newspaper carriers to make this metamorphosis a seamless transition. We’re excited and think our readers will appreciate the opportunity to read local, state and world news as they begin the day.
Even our critics may be critiquing earlier.
We thank our regular news contributors, readers and advertisers for their continued support and trust. See you in the morning.
