Marques delivered 11 mind blowing kills
Both Waimea varsity teams left Clem Gomes Gym last night with wins under their belts.
The Kapa’a boy’s squad seemed to have the edge in the first two minutes of the first game. But, like last Saturday’s match-up against Kaua’i, they self-destructed, losing in two sets: 15-13, 17-15.
Much like last week, Warrior’s stars Garret Danner and Austin “Maka” Alapai came out big in the first period.
Danner began with three aces to put the Warriors up 4-0 in the first. Alapai added a block and a monster kill only moments later to render the score 7-1.
From there, though, things seemed to go downhill for the Warriors.
The Menehune’s came back strong, eventually tying the game at eight a piece and taking over to eventually win 15-13.
“Play the game,” Coach Mannny Henriques told Alapai at the half, trying to get his star to stay focused until the game’s finale.
And for the most part he did, landing 11 mind-blowing kills on the Menehunes, three of which kept the Warriors in the game till the very end.
But when it was all said and done, it was another big man who laid the final hurt on Kapa’a.
And his name is James Marques.
Marques delivered 11 mind blowing kills of his own along with two perfect aces.
One of his kills eventually tied the second game at 15, where Waimea ended up taking over and winning 17-15.
Waimea’s girls also slashed another line in the win column, taking the Kapa’a Warriors in two sets, 15-9, 15-12.
Although the Menehunes played poorly, having the guns but often shooting themselves in the foot, they were able to pull it off.
“This was not a very strong performance by the girls,” said Menehune Coach Doc Arrington.
“We played a tough Warrior team but we often hurt ourselves out there. The kids were losing their focus and just weren’t playing their game.”
In J.V. action, the Kapa’a boys edged out Waimea 14-16, 15-8, 7-5, while the Waimea girls crushed Kapa’a 15-3, 15-6.
