Waimea will travel to Kaua’i Wednesday night to kick off the 2001 Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation volleyball season.
The Red Raiders’ boys and girls will look to defend the KIF crowns they secured last year. It was the girls’ first-ever championship after Waimea’s long run at the top.
In the chase for this year’s girls’ title, the Red Raiders again appear strong and will be led by senior Kehau Regidor. Waimea should provide a significant challenge, and Kapa’a looks considerably improved from last year’s winless campaign.
The boys’ battle will be highly competitive.
In the most recent Hawai’i Sports Network poll, Waimea was ranked No. 7, Kapa’a No. 11 and Kaua’i tied for 16th.
The defending-champion Raiders are young and athletic. Waimea will be led by senior James Marques. Kapa’a, impressive on the first day of the recent Waimea Invitational, will lean on Maka Alapai for leadership.
The schedule: JV girls at 3 p.m., JV boys at 4:15 p.m., varsity boys at 5:30 p.m. and varsity girls at 6:45 p.m.
