Koloa’s Hattie Sommerville and her daughter, Betsy, of Jersey City, N.J., won the United States Tennis Association Grass Court 2001 Senior Mother Daughter Championship. The event was held August 24-26 in Newport, R.I.
The pair won a coveted gold ball and their names are now inscribed on the trophy at the Tennis Hall of Fame.
Locally, two island teams fared well at the statewide sectional playoffs on Maui August 17-19. The women’s 4.0 squad, Kamali’i Mai Kaua’i and 3.5 team, Ikaika, placed second in respective divisions.
As a reminder, a captains meeting will be held September 8 at 11 a.m. at the Kaua’i Marriott tennis courts to discuss the Ekolu League season.
Kawaihau Little League board meeting
The Kawaihau Community Little League will be holding its annual general membership meeting/Board of Directors election on Thursday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m., at the Kapa’a Neighborhood Center.
The league urges all interested parties to attend and vote for the next 2001-02 board.
NSSA to get going in mid-September
The National Scholastic Surfing Association – Hawai’i will kick off its 2001-02 season with an even at Davidsons on September 15-16. The nine-event series will be held at various locations across the state. It will be a qualifier for the NSSA-Hawai’i Regional Championships slated for Turtle Bay on Oahu during spring break.
The regional championship will serve as a qualifier for the NSSA National Championship at Lower Trestles, California in late June.

Kapa’a Clubhouse flag football
Come join the Boys & Girls Club of Hawai’i-Kapa’a Clubhouse’s Flag Football Leagues. Learn the basics of throwing, catching and running with the football. Three age groups will be available, 7-9, 10-12, 13-14.
The Boys & Girls Clubhouse – Kapa’a League runs from October 1 thru November 17. Play is free to current members, $10 for a one-year membership.
