Kaua’i’s Yates jumps to Triple-A
Kaua’i High School graduate Tyler Yates has been promoted to Sacramento of the Pacific Coast League.
Yates pitched two-and-one-third innings of hitless relief in his Triple-A debut and earned the save as Sacramento defeated Tucson.
The former Red Raider had appeared in 56 games with 17 saves for Midland of the Double-A Texas League prior to being called up.
A right-hander, Yates compiled a 4-6 record with a 4.31 earned run average at Midland.
Yates played his college ball at the University of Hawai’i-Hilo.
Soccer tourney at Waipio Complex
The Honolulu Coed Soccer Tournament will be held Saturday, Sunday and Monday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.
Teams from Oahu, Maui, the Big Island, Kaua’i and Japan will compete in 7-a-side and 11-a-side competitions.
Matches start at 9 a.m. each day and run to about 5 p.m.

Kaua’i girls break into volleyball poll
The Kaua’i High girls volleyball team broke into the Hawai’i Sports Network top 10 poll this week. The Red Raiders are ranked 10th, up from an 11th last week, after placing third at the Kamehameha tournament over the weekend.
Kaua’i was 5-1 on the tourney’s first day, putting itself into the gold pool with Kamehameha, Hilo and Kaimuki. The Red Raiders split with Hilo, ranked sixth in the state, and Kaimuki and were swept by Kamehameha.
The state’s boys’ volleyball poll features both Waimea, at No. 7, and Kapa’a, at No. 9. Kaua’i High is currently the 11th-ranked team in the state and also traveled last weekend, to a tournament in Hilo.
The Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation volleyball season kicks off Saturday, Sept. 19, when Waimea travels to Kaua’i. Games start at 3 p.m. with junior varsity boys
In the prep football poll, Waimea moved up to the ninth spot with its dominating 45-0 win over Hilo last Saturday.
Kaua’i hosts Waimea in the KIF football opener on September 7 at 7:30 p.m.
