Golfer, 11, wins oldest division of junior event
Already a buzz follows her to whatever venue she plays. Crowds flock and so does the media.
Not bad for an 11 year old.
Michelle Wie, the golfing phenom who took the state by storm when she won the Jennie K. Invitational in May, has inspired a Tiger Woods-like interest in her fledgling career.
Last weekend, Wie was on Kaua’i for the third of eight events in the Hawai’i State Junior Golf Association Junior Tour Series. Young golfers teed up at Poipu Bay Golf Course, vying for the top spot in four divisions.
Wie won the 15-18 girls division and was the medalist in the competition. She shot a 1-under 71 to win by six strokes over Kaua’i’s Lehua Wise.
In the 10-under boys division, Travis Shigeta and Christopher Llarenas both shot a 42 for nine holes. Two playoff holes delivered the victory to Shigeta.
Other age division winners were: Travis Toyama and Kelly Nakashima in the 13-14; Jordan Cox and Stephanie Cox in the 11-12; and Ha’aheo Manini-Hew Len in the 10-under girls.
“We . . . want to thank management and ownership of the Poipu Bay Golf Course for providing this wonderful venue for the HSJGA to bring together so many juniors from around the state,” said HSJGA President Mary Bea Porter-King.
