Jesse Deando of Puhi has been honored by the Kaua’i County Police Department for his help locating a missing person.
Deando 14, and his friend Eugene Bejo, also 14, of the Big Island, were riding their bikes in the Kukui Grove Center area recently near the golf driving range when they saw an elderly lady.
A couple hours later, when the boys saw police and emergency personnel searching the area for a missing person, they directed officers to the scene. Rosalie Peters, who had wandered away from a care location, was found and was hospitalized, but later died.
The woman’s family thanked the boys for helping find her, and last Friday during a county Police Commission meeting, Deando was presented a formal citation in recognition of his effort.
The honor was presented by Wilfred Ihu, acting police chief, and detective S. Oliveira.
