Luxury hotels on Kaua’i had an occupancy rate of 80.9 percent in June, second-best in the state behind only first-class properties on O’ahu (81.8 percent).
The figures are part of the quality and size report from the Honolulu accounting and management firm PKF-Hawai’i, which separates for the purposes of this report hotel occupancies across the state by quality of rooms and size of properties.
Statewide for June, first-class hotel rooms had the highest occupancy rate, at 79.4 percent, down from 83.1 percent in the same month last year.
When categorized by size, the state’s larger hotels had the best June occupancy rate, at 80 percent for hotels with 351 to 500 rooms. Overall statewide occupancy in June of this year was 74.4 percent, down from 80.5 percent in June 2000.
Average daily room rates were up statewide, from $148.19 in June of 2000 to $155.54 in June this year, though room revenue per available room dropped slightly, to $115.69 in June of this year compared to $119.25 in June of 2000.
In June of this year, Kaua’i first-class, deluxe and standard occupancy rates were all in the 60-something-percent neighborhood, and like the luxury class all down compared to rates recorded in June of last year.
The overall Kaua’i June occupancy rate this year was 70.7 percent, down from 81.7 percent during the same period last year.
Staying in the quality category, luxury hotels on Kaua’i also had the best Kaua’i occupancy rate, and one of the best in the state, for the first half of this year, at 79.9 percent, down from 85.5 percent during the same period last year.
The Kaua’i first-class, deluxe and standard occupancy rates were all in the 60-something-percent range, with all but Kaua’i standard rooms (68.5 percent for the first half of 2001 compared to 65.5 percent for the same period last year) showing occupancy percentage drops compared to the first half of 2000.
For the first half of this year, Kaua’i’s overall occupancy rate was 69.9 percent, worst among the counties and off from the 75.9 percent rate recorded over the first six months of 2000. For the first half of this year, the statewide occupancy rate was 76.4 percent, down from 78.6 percent for the same period in 2000.
Categorized by size of hotels, Kaua’i’s hotels between 100 and 200 rooms did best, at 68.5 percent, down from 75.5 percent in June of last year. Larger Kaua’i hotels (those with 351 and more rooms) don’t get reported in this survey, so individual hotel occupancy rates aren’t revealed.
For the first half of this year on Kaua’i, hotels between 100 and 200 rooms in size did best, at 71.7 percent occupancy, up from 68.9 percent during the first half of 2000.
