Menehunes pick up awards, valuable skill during time off
Under the direction of head coach Kim Frasco and assistant coach Lori Pigao, the Waimea High School cheerleaders had the opportunity to attend cheer camps this summer on Kaua’i and Oahu.
They will attend another cheer camp – staffed by Cheer Jamz from the Mainland – this week on Kaua’i.
At the 2001 Champion Cheerleading Camp at Aiea High School, Waimea came home with the fourth-place overall trophy out of the 14 that attended.
The camp, held July 27-29, was staffed by North Carolina State University cheerleaders, along with former Wolfpack head coach Cathy Buckley. Participating teams were Damien, Aiea, Moanaluna, Kalani, St. Louis Blue and Red, Kamehameha Blue and White, Kaimuki, Radford, Kaiser, Kailua and Castle.
Other awards were best sideline/crowd response, outstanding leadership & cheerleading skills, super sharp motions and the award of excellence.
In June, the Waimea cheer team had the good fortune of having the University of Hawai’i at Manoa’s cheerleaders on island to teach a two-day camp.
At the camps, the squad learned learned new dance routines, cheers and stunting and safety techniques. The work has team members looking forward to Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation action this year.
Team members include Linsey Caoagdan, Michelle Chiba, Keala DelaCruz, Bree Fujita, Ipo Kali, Amber Locquiao, Chaunte Medeiros, Cassie Otto, Lorrie Otto, Letisha Pancho, Mona Planas, Stephanie Poteete, Jasmine Quibilan, Kelsey Sagucio, Jennifer Tambio and Tylin Walter.
