Keenan Anaya is the first swimmer from Kaua’i ever to participate in Western Zone Championships.
And the first to get such an aggressive wake-up call.
The meet, which brings together the best young swimmers from 12 western states, began Tuesday on Maui.
It continues through Saturday at the Kihei Aquatic Center.
And there’s speed on display. Over 60 records have been broken at the meet, mostly by swimmers from California and Colorado.
Anaya, 12, has simply been working to keep his head above water. The Mokihana Aquatic swimmer was scheduled to participate in 10 events. Through Friday, he’d finished seven of them – four individual events and three relays.
Of the four solo swims, Anaya has bettered his best time in just one – the 100-meter butterfly. He finished the distance in 1:11.85, down from his best of 1:12.56. He finished 19th overall. His other individual events have been the 50 free (29.25), where he finished 18th overall; the 50 butterfly (32.20), a 21st-place finish; and the 200 free (2:22), good for 22nd.
The relays have been a slightly different story. Anaya, competing for the Hawaiian Swimming ‘A’ team of 11-12 year olds, has been a part of some strong swims.
The team finished seventh in the 400 medley relay, of which Anaya swam the butterfly leg, in a time of 4:56.03.
They placed fifth in the 200 free relay in a time of 1:55.14. The team placing first swam a 1:52.54, good for a new Western Zone record.
Saturday, Anaya will swim the 50 backstroke, 100 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay.
