It was raining at the start of the game but that didn’t stop Stuart MacKenzie, playing for Bali Hai this week, from chalking up two scores early in the first action. Visiting player Gary Pollack added another score, helping to restore Bali Hai’s confidence after their loss last Sunday and giving them a 3-0 lead at the end of chukker 1.
It was still misting at the outset of chukker 2, making it hard to see from the sidelines. Hal Hargrave took the ball right down field, missed the shot but was saved as Peter Cameron drove in, picked it up and scored for Kaua’i Polo.
Hargrave took control again, but Bali Hai players were riding off their competitors hard, holding them scoreless. Then Jana Mailow, a new player this year, found the ball and cautiously nursed it downfield unchallenged, scoring for Bali Hai. As the 30-second bell warned the end of chukker 2, Hargrave moved in fast to score for Kaua’i Polo, leaving the field at half time with Bali Hai leading 4-2.
The weather cleared following half time. A jazzed Jana took control of the ball from a long shot fired by Stuart and scored again for Bali Hai. Kaua’i Polo, anxious to produce another rout like last week, sent Kamalu Sheldon in a fast ride toward the goal, passing off to Peter for an easy hit through the pylons. Stuart sneaked up on the bowl-in and quickly slammed another scoring shot. At the 30-second warning bell old timer Carlos Elzuardia thrilled his fans with an aggressive ride to score ending the 3rd chukker, 7-3.
Bali Hai was looking forward to a win at the outset of the 4th chukker, but Kim Kelly, replacing Hargrave, was a formidable adversary and came charging down the field with what looked like a certain score.
Carlos intervened at the pylons, riding to score again for Bali Hai. Stung, Kelly came right back at the opposite end of the field, scoring for Kaua’i Polo. Carlos, back in his stride after a year without riding, captured the ball, scoring for a hat trick and giving. Bali Hai a safe lead of 9-4. Again at the 30 second warning, Peter Cameron captured the ball and scored for Kaua’i Polo and his own hat trick as the bell ended the game, 9-5 Bali Hai.
