8-4 win over West Kaua’i seals the deal
The Kaua’i Senior Citizen Softball League champions look awfully familiar.
That’s because The Rookies have secured the title for second consecutive year. With an 8-4 victory over West Kaua’i on Saturday at Kaumakani Park, The Rookies wrapped up the second-round championship. Having won the first-round crown, that was all The Rookies needed to do to claim victory.
The Rookies will play in the ‘A’ division at the state tournament. West Kaua’i will play in the ‘B’ division.
After a wild final weekend that saw West Kaua’i win and The Rookies fall victim to an upset, the stage was set for the second-round showdown.
West Kaua’i came up with three runs in the top of the first to start the game. Danny Manus and Boni Garma got on with back-to-back hits. Then, Frank Bukoski belted triple to bring both men home. Mike Floster drove Bukoski in with a sacrifice fly.
But The Rookies charged back in the home half of the first with six runs. The team put up two more runs in the bottom of the second to pad its lead.
West Kaua’i added one more run in the fourth inning.
The game then became a pitcher’s duel: Archie Fontanilla for The Rookies and Joe Silva for West Kaua’i shut out the opposing teams’ batters. Fontanilla, who gave up just eight hits for the game, upped his record to 17-2 with the win.
Hank Nishikawa and Dickie Sialava had three hits apiece for The Rookies. Garma was the only West Kauaian with three hits.
The Lihu’e A’s and East Kaua’i will represent the island in the ‘C’ division at the state tournament. The K-Makules will play in the ‘D’ division. Kawaihau will battle in the ‘E’ division.
