LIHU’E – Championship berths for the Kaua’i Youth Basketball Association (KYBA) playoffs were set Wednesday night following a pair of matches between the Kalena Specials and Kapa’a, and Na Ua and Shake ‘N Bake.
Kalena Specials survived a strong second half comeback effort by Kapa’a to take a 35-31 squeaker into the locker rooms behind a 12-point showing from Belinda Butac who sizzled the hoop with a pair of treys in the opening stanza.
Tania Tasic of Kapa’a outshot Butac 14-12 to lead the Kapa’a effort, Tasic piling up 10 of her points in the second half.
Kapa’a took a digit lead 25-24 at the end of the third period behind balanced scoring from Tasic (4 points) and Ashley Farias (5 points), but Kalena roared back 11-6 in the final quadrant to wrap up the win. Kapa’a notched a 14-6 showing in the third frame.
Na Ua came into the gym less four players from their roster due to off-island commitments, and that left a 6-player roster to tangle with Shake ‘N Bake who showed up in full strength to take the contest 29-9.
Farren Higley picked up 6 points to lead Na Ua with Sarah Curnan (10 points) and Napua Naumu (9 points) combining for 19 points to lead Shake ‘N Bake.
The win sets up the championship showdown between the Shake ‘N Bake and Kalena Specials Saturday, July 21 at the Kaua’i High School gym. Tipoff for the championship game is 5 p.m. Third place contest tips off at 4 p.m. between Na Ua and Kapa’a.
