Saturday, August 18 is the date set for the free golf workship for beginning women golfers at the Poipu Bay Golf Course on Kaua’i.
The workshops which is made possible through a grant from the USGA, will begin at 8:15 a.m. and run through noon.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own clubs and shoes, if preferred.
This is the second year for this project, and applications are being accepted from junior girl golfers this year.
The workshop will cover simple rules, etiquette, equipment overview, and club formation.
Professional golf instruction on the putting green, chipping area, and driving range will also be featured.
The Hawai’i State Women’s Golf Association (HSWGA) will be hosting the event.
For more information, contact the HSWGA office at (808) 589-2046, or e-mail hswga@lava.net.
Na Pali Challenge coming August 5
The 4th Annual Na Pali Challenge will take place on Sunday, August 5 with the LeMans start of 6-man canoes from the beach at Hanalei Bay.
Thirty-five miles down the Na Pali coast, the finalists will finish at the Kekaha Neighborhood Center to a waiting reception of food, music, entertainment, and crafts.
This year’s Challenge which follows two days of Hawai’i State Canoe Championship Races promises to be the biggest one yet with an anticipated 33 canoes participating.
Events consist of races for Koa and non-Koa canoes within several age groups including Na Opio, Open, Masters 35+, and Masters 40+.
One of the most unusual aspects of the Na Pali Challenge is the crew changes at thirty minute intervals are effected by crews of the opposite sex, one of the few events to combine men’s and women’s teams.
Kaua’i’s voyaging canoe, Namahoe, the beneficiary of the fund-raiser, is currently under construction in a large shed on Halehaka Road.
Its first hull is emerging under the guidance of Na Kalai Wa’a o Kaua’i President John Kruse and dedicated volunteers who work Saturdays and Sundays to fulfill this mission.
Lihu’e Court residents have participated enthusiastically in this historic undertaking, and Wednesday nights, students of sailmaster Dennis Chun, professor of Hawaiian Studies at Kaua’i Community College, volunteer their time and labor to fully experience the excitement and achievement that Namahoe represents to Kaua’i.
