Land stretching from Hanama’ulu Bay to Wailua Golf Course could be turned into another golf course by its new owner.
The former Amfac sugar land, about 400 acres on the ocean side of Kuhio Highway, was recently purchased by Las Vegas resident Ernest Moody. His Kaua’i attorney said Moody is considering various alternatives for uses of the property.
“We are exploring a number of different options for use of the property that would be appropriate, given its location, community’s needs and so forth,” said Walton Hong, attorney for Moody and the company he formed to purchase the property, EWM Kaua’i.
“We have come up with some preliminary concepts, which we are presently investigating as to the zoning issues, and the feasibility of those concepts. One of those concepts involves a golf course,” Hong said. “But it is preliminary. Nothing’s definite yet.”
It is likely that state Land Use Commission, Kaua’i County Planning Commission and County Council approvals will be necessary for development of the property, he said.
Moody, an inventor who has developed electronic games used in Las Vegas and elsewhere, has no involvement in casinos, and has no intention of establishing any kind of gaming business on Kaua’i, according to Hong.
The 400-acre parcel, listed for $3.9 million, sold earlier this year for somewhere near the asking price.
