The Fifth Judicial Circuit (Kaua’i) Court has changed the schedule of court proceedings heard at the Waimea, Koloa and Kawaihau district courts.
The changes are an effort to make better use of resources by consolidating services and establish a more secure environment.
The Waimea District Court proceedings will be heard at the Waimea Courthouse only on the first Wednesday of each month, beginning at 9:00 a.m. and continuing until the last case is heard.
Courts will be closed on Wednesday, July 4, so the first newly scheduled Waimea proceedings will be on August 1.
The Koloa District Court proceedings will no longer be heard in Koloa. They are transferring to the Lihu’e Courthouse, every Thursday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Kawaihau proceedings will continue to take place in the Lihu’e Courthouse every Thursday from 8 a.m. until 1;30 p.m.
Kawaihau proceedings were once heard in the Kapa’a Library but moved to Lihu’e several years ago, according to Court Administrator Ernest Barreira.
As a rule, all the District Court matters are heard by Judge Trudy Senda and the family court matters are heard by Judge Calvin Murashige.
Although there is no venue by rule, misdemeanors offenders are cited according to geographical convenience according to Ernest Barreira.
Barreira said he expected a consolidation of all district court matters in Lihu’e with the completion of the new Courthouse in 2005.
The Lihu’e Courthouse is located at 3059 Umi Street and the Waimea Courthouse is located at 4556 Makeke Road.
Anyone with questions about the District Court should call the administrator, Ernest Barreira, at 246-3330.
All changes take effect July 2.
