A 18-year-old Boy Scout from O’ahu was airlifted by helicopter out of Waimea Canyon Friday night after having an adverse reaction from eating Kukui nuts.
The youth, who was not identified, was treated at Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital and later discharged, a hospital spokesman said.
Kukui nuts are safe to eat, but the youth apparently was allergic to them, the spokesman said.
After being notified of the incident shortly after 6 p.m., a search and rescue team from the Lihu’e Fire Station was sent to a campsite at the end of Kukui Trail.
An Inter-Island Helicopter was sent to the area as well and transported the youth out of the area, according to Waimea Fire Capt. Dellick Numazawa.
