Kaua’i County Police have moved the investigation of a dog attack that left a horse dead in Princeville three weeks ago to the detectives’ bureau in Lihu’e.
The investigation had been being handled by the Police Department’s Hanalei substation.
“Detective Glenn Morita will be in charge of the investigation,” Lt. Alvin Seto said Wednesday, adding, “There are several suspects we are looking at now.”
Three dogs that witnesses described as pit bulls, weighing between 50 and 100 pounds apiece, attacked a horse being ridden by a woman May 18 on a trail on the rim of the Hanalei Valley.
The rider was bucked off and not seriously injured, but the horse died.
The dogs nor their owner have been identified. A local man was seen in the area after the incident, and police released an artist’s sketch of him 10 days ago in hope of learning his identity from the public and questioning him.
There are rumors that at least one of the three dogs died in the attack, but no dog’s carcass was recovered.
Seto said anyone with information on the case is asked to call Morita at 241-6701.
Seto said there is still a Crimestoppers reward of “$1,000 plus” for a tip that leads to the arrest of a suspect in the case. Crimestoppers can be called at 241-6787. All calls are kept confidential, officials said.
The Kaua’i Humane Society also is offering a $1,000 reward.
