Child safety activities tomorrow
King Auto Center in Lihu’e will be the scene Saturday of events related to Child Safety Awareness Day.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., families will receive information and instruction on vehicle and traffic safety, prevention of common household and sports-related injuries, and safe use of the Internet.
Additionally, families can obtain photo passports of their children, courtesy of Polaroid’s Project KidCare. The documents include current information, physical descriptions and photo identifications of their children. Authorities say the information is imperative to the search and recoveries of missing children.
King Auto Center is at 4330 Kukui Grove St. For more information, call (808) 245-4788.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, transportation-related injuries are the leading cause of death for all children older than 1. Six out of 10 children who die in vehicle crashes are not restrained in child safety seats.
Transfer stations close for holiday
Kaua’i County’s waste transfer stations in Hanalei, Kapa’a, Lihu’e, Hanapepe and Kekaha will be closed May 28 in observance of Memorial Day.
Regular household and business garbage collection service will not be interrupted by the holiday. Additional information is available from the Public Works Department at 241-6631.
Grant aids pool hall study
A research assistance grant of $1,500 has been awarded by the Hawai’i Council for the Humanities for a study of the history of the old Hanapepe pool hall.
Carol Bain is the recipient of the grant. Through historical records and interviews, she and another local historian, John Lydgate, have researched the site’s past as a community center and gathering place.
The grant is among eight recently awarded by the council in support of non-profit educational projects statewide.
