There are plans to expand the Port Allen Small Boat Harbor, grand enough in scale so that the existing recreational boat harbor would become the commercial harbor.
The recreational boaters would have their own new facility, likely adjacent to the existing recreational harbor, according to Jim Schoocraft, a state Department of Land and Natural Resources boating staff officer.
A public meeting on what is being called the “mini-master plan” for the harbor is set for Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Hanapepe United Church of Christ, off Kaumuali’i Highway. Additional information on the meeting is available at 245-8028.
Currently, the commercial portion of the harbor, still under the control of the state Department of Transportation’s Harbors Division, includes the long pier from where Navy target and range retrieval ships launch, and an area where tour boats operate on the Kalaheo side of the pier.
The DLNR Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation has taken control of the recreational portion of the harbor.
The DOT Harbors Division has a public hearing on the draft long-range plan for its portion of the pier and harbor scheduled for May 22 at 10 a.m. at Hanapepe Recreation Center.
