Police animal protection beefed up
The state has set penalties for anyone convicted of injuring or killing a police dog or horse.
The penalties are part of amended penal codes approved by the Legislature during the recent 2001 session and signed into law by Governor Ben Cayetano.
Included in the amendments is the addition of state-owned telecommunications systems, including radio, telephone and television, to the list of government operations that can’t be interfered with.

Hawai’i receives AmeriCorps grants
Grants totaling more than $800,000 have been awarded by AmeriCorps to programs in Hawai’i, U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink announced.
A grant of $290,980 is going to the Legal Aid Society of Hawai’i, which provides legal services to low-income families and individuals statewide.
The other grant ($529,356) is for Volunteer Legal Services’ anti-violence program, including legal services for children and domestic violence victims.
Mink (D-2nd District) said AmeriCorp members participating in these service projects can receive up to $4,725 to cover education expenses or repay existing student loans. Members also receive living-expense allowances.
