Saturday, May 26, 2001 – 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Kukui Grove Shopping Center – Lihu’e Fair exhibits will be located on the mall behind Longs Drugs & American Savings Bank
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has designated May 20-26, 2001 as Project Impact Awareness week. This also comes on the eve of the 2001 Hurricane season.
This informational fair is designed to provide information and assistance to the general public on natural disasters in general, but specifically to disasters that have struck Kauai – hurricanes, floods and tsunamis. The goal is to help the community better prepare for the next natural disaster through hardening systems, or even just purchasing flood insurance.
This first-ever fair will bring together select county, state, and federal agencies who work with emergencies, disasters, disaster preparedness or planning and private sector businesses who provide services, products, or materials for disaster mitigation.
Exhibitors will include:
– Hawai’i Coastal Zone Management Program will have information on Coastal Zone Management program. They will also have activities for children writing and coloring and making luggage/backpack tags. The Hawai’i Coastal Zone Management Program is a state agency in the Department,of Business Economic Development and Tourism.
– Service Rentals and Supplies will have information on post disaster clean-up as well as:generators and maintenance of generators.
– Honsador Lumber Corporation is the island’s largest Simpson products distributor and will be available to discuss Simpson Strong ties and the importance of using the right kind of fasteners so ties are still effective when you need them during high wind events.
– SC Pacific Corp/Rollaway Shutters will have information and display on steel component safe-room like the one donated to the County of Kaua’i (which will be on display). They will also have storm panels, accordion shutter protection, and roll down shutter protection.
– U.S. Small Business Administration representatives will be available to discuss SBA programs available to the community.
– National Weather Service will have personnel available to talk about hurricane events.
– Tsunami Warning Center will have representatives available to talk about tsunami and how to prepare for a tsunami event.
– 3M Hawai’i representatives will have information on 3M Scotchshield Safety and Security Windown Film.
– Contractors Association of Kaua’i contractors will be on hand to talk about steel and concrete construction and maintenance.
– Cement and Concrete Products Industry of Hawai’i will be represented by member Hale Kauai, Ltd who will have a display of a variety of concrete blocks and how they are used in construction.
– Kaua’.i Humane Society: will have information on how to care for pets in times of:disasters.
