The second-shortest state road on the island will get its entire length – about three miles – resurfaced this summer.
Nawiliwili Road is also known (mostly by visitors) as State Highway 58. Only Highway 541, or the half-mile Waialo Road leading from Kaumuali’i Highway to the Port Allen pier and small boat harbor, is a shorter state stretch.
Niu Construction Inc. has been awarded the $1.3 million contract to resurface Nawiliwili Road from its intersection with Kaumuali’i Highway at Kukui Grove Center to its intersection with Wa’apa Road.
Besides the resurfacing, the work includes rebuilding weakened pavement, existing curbs, curb ramps and drain inlets; and removing and installing a grated drop inlet and concrete gutter, pavement markings, traffic signs and metal guardrails.
The contract was awarded earlier this month. It will likely be 60 days before a notice to proceed with work is issued by the state, said Marilyn Kali, state Department of Transportation spokeswoman.
Without the notice, the state doesn’t have a contractor’s schedule, so Kali couldn’t predict how long the work will take or what kinds of disruptions the motoring public can expect during the contract period.
Residents of area subdivisions, mainly Ulu Ko, have no alternative but to use Nawiliwili Road and will probably be impacted by the construction work. Most other motorists will likely be able to find alternative routes around the roadwork.
