The 2001 YMCA Roller Hockey League playoffs began with seven games April 26-28 at Kapa’a New Park.
As of yet, no teams have been eliminated, however, that may happen Friday, when the Squirt Division will play the second of its best of three series at 5 p.m.
The Squirt Division (10-under) has just two teams. Last weekend, the Papayas Pythons defeated the Hesse Carpet Menehunes 8-6, with Travis Shigeta and Amanda Mayer scoring three goals each. Noah Murray led the Menehunes with five goals. Shaun Hashi had 26 saves for the victors.
In the Bantam Division (13-under) the Meadow Gold Moovers won twice, beating the North Shore Custom Floors Bent Bullets 5-3, and the Kaua’i Electric Chargers 4-3. The Chargers then defeated the Rainbow Garden Rollers 5-4, while the Bent Bullets and the Rollers skated to a 5-5 tie.
The team with the most points after Friday’s action will move directly to the Bantam final. The second- and third-ranked teams will duke it out Sunday for the other finals berth.
The Moovers were led by Jacob Pierce’s four goals and two assists and Ryan Swanson’s 62 saves in goal. Garren Venzon led the chargers with six goals and one assist, while Treston Rego had 79 saves in goal. The Bent Bullets were led by Bruce Perdue’s three goals and one assist and Keala Davis’ one goal and three assists. The Rollers were led by Daniel Labuguen’s three goals and three assists and Ryder Mueller’s four goals.
In the Midget Division (17-under) the Kapa’a Ice Company Penguins beat the Sleeping Giants 8-5. The Giants then skated by the Tanigawa Construction Kings 5-3.
Friday action will send one Midget team directly to the Friday, May 11 final. Teams two and three will battle for the second berth.
For the Penguins, Matthew Fujikawa scored five goals and one assist, while Alohi Costa had 44 saves in goal. For the Giants, David Laguatan scored two goals and four assists and Derrick Laguatan had two goals and two assists in their two games. Carl Tennberg recorded 59 saves in goal for the Giants.
