After taking the Saturday before Easter off, the Kaua’i Senior Citizens Softball League was back in action last Saturday, April 21 at the Kapa’a Ball Field.
With its crushing 16-6 win over the Lihu’e A’s, the Rookies wrapped up the first-round championship in the KSCSL. Archie Fontilla pitched his seventh win. Tomo Hiranaka picked up a loss in his first outing for Lihu’e. Nelson Mendonca provided the big stick for The Rookies, getting four hits, including a home run. Hank Nishikawa was 3-for-3 and walked twice and Dickie Sialaua got three hits. Ismo Yoshishigi and ChicCacabalos led the A’s with three hits each.
In other action, East Kaua’i pulled out a 12-10 thriller over West Kaua’i. Walter Silva upped his pitching record to 5-3 on the season with the win, while Joe Silva dropped to 3-4. No player from either team was able to muster more than two hits.
For East Kaua’i, Ed Boles, Alex Youn, Les Kubo, John Garcia and Ronie Holt all recorded two. West Kaua’i team members with two hits were Frank Bukoski (both home runs), Mike Foster, Danny Manus, Maxie Moveno, Joe Silva and “Blondie” Caveiro.
In the final game of the afternoon, K-Makules got its first win of the season, downing Kawaihau 12-3. Benny Callejo worked six and two-thirds innings to notch his first win. Teddy Daligdig picked up the loss, allowing the K-Makules 18 hits. Eight K-Makule batters recorded two hits each. Mamo Matsumura was the only Kawaihau team member with two hits.
Next week, Kawaihau meets West Kaua’i at 9:15 a.m.; East Kaua’i gets The Rookies after; and K-Makules takes on the Lihu’e A’s in the final contest.
