The Schedule is in place. It’s subject to change, but at least it’s something to go on.
Kauai Interscholastic Federation executive secretary Brent Mizutani laid out a tentative schedule Friday whereby each spring sport will finish.
While stressing that minor adjustments may have to be made along the way, Mizutani sounded fairly certain that the dates and times now in place will be realized.
“What we have is the schedule as of today,” Mizutani said. “It’s the best we could do with the time available.”
Which is minimal. The first state tournaments are boys’ and girls’ golf, each of which are slated for May 12 on Maui.
“Everything’s so compressed,” Mizutani said.
Though not everyone will be ecstatic with the setup. Because of the unavoidable brevity, basketball and baseball will finish one series of play then move directly into a round-robin tournament to decide the KlF champion. The format penalizes the first series winner giving it only a bye in the first round of the round robin. Still, the team can be eliminated in one game. Though unavailable for comment Friay, Kaua’i girls basketball coach Penny Vess and Red Raiders baseball coach Kenneth Mizuo, KIF leaders in their respective sport, previously expressed their concern over the possibility of this format.
Mizutani said the best was done to accommodate as many games as possible.
