Playing on their home turf, Kaua’i golfers captured most of the awards at the two-day Hawai’i Government Employees Association Retirees Golf Tournament. Action took place April 18-19 at Wailua Golf Course.
Kaua’i’s Harry Muranaka was the overall winner with a score of 140. For his effort, he was awarded the Governor’s Trophy and an inter-island round-trip airline ticket. Just behind Muranka was Kaua’i’s Warren Wada with a 141. He earned the Mayor’s Trophy and a round-trip ticket, as well.

In each flight, the first six place winners were awarded merchandise cash prized ranging from $50 to $15, and places seven to ten won from six golf balls to three.
Announcement for local amateur golfers
Amateur golfers beware, the 2001 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship will be held at the Pecan Valley Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas, over the week of July 9-14.
The Kaua’i sectional qualifying tournament, a 36-hole medal play will be held at the Wailua Golf Course Saturday, June 9. Island golfers are urged to file their entries early. Completed entry must be received by no later than 5 p.m. EST on Wednesday, May 23, at one of the following addresses:

Entries by telephone, telegraph or fax will not be accepted. The entry fee is $30 and should be made payable to the USGA. Those entering must have an up-to-date USGA handicap index of 8.4 or lower.
Golfers should also be aware of the following change which began in 2000: Players will no longer be permitted to accept reimbursement for their championship expenses due to the recent removal of this provision from the USGA Rules of Amateur Status.
