HANALEI – The 23rd Annual Pinetrees Longboard Surf Classic is set for Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29.
The popular community-focused surfing contest is held at Pine Trees, a beach break surfing spot located along Hanalei Bay. The contest is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. In case of poor surf conditions the alternate dates are Saturday, May 5 Sunday, May 6.
Event organizer Bobby Cocke of Kai Kane surf shop in Hanalei said the long-running event is expected to draw surfers from across Kaua’i and from other Hawaiian Islands.
Cocke said in addition to a full slate of longboard surfing events – including a keiki 8 years-and-under, and women’s events – a new ‘Ohana division is being added.
The new event will pit families against families and should provide a new highlight for the Pinetrees contest, he said. The child in the event must be 17 years old or under.
The Pinetrees Longboard Contest is one of the longest running in the world of surfing and was begun in the late 1970s as a fun event for North Shore residents at a time when longboard surfing wasn’t popular. With the return of longboard surfing to mass popularity at beaches across the globe the Pinetrees Contest has become Kaua’i’s main contribution to the sport.
The entry fee is $20 and includes a contest T-shirt. There is a extra fee of $10 for competitors in the ‘Ohana contest.
Entry forms can be picked up at Kai Kane in Hanalei and at other surf shops across the island. However, entry forms must be turned in at Kai Kane. Call 826-5594 for more information.
Quiksilver is helping sponsor the event. Finalists will be eligible for prizes.
