It is not that often, if ever, that Gisela Birkenstock attends the grand opening of one of the shops carrying the name of her and husband Karl Birkenstock, company owner.
But she is expected at the grand opening of Naturally Birkenstock along Kuhio Highway in Kapa’a this Friday and Saturday, April 27 and 28.
Gisela Birkenstock will be in the store for the festivities, which take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.
During the grand opening celebration, free pairs of Birkenstock footwear will be given away, as well as a North Face tent and a North Face backpack, according to Lorraine Hermanson, owner of Naturally Birkenstock.
Refreshments will be served, and Birkenstock beach towels, beach balls and flying discs will be given away with every purchase.
“We are thrilled that Gisela Birkenstock will be here for this very special event,” said Hermanson. “This is a wonderful area, and we are looking forward to being part of the Kapa’a community.”
Hermanson, her husband and son own and operate three Naturally Birkenstock stores on Maui, and hope eventually to have a Birkenstock store on every island. Opening her first Maui store 11 years ago, Hermanson became familiar with the Birkenstock products after her doctor recommended she try wearing a pair to relieve her back pain.
The new Kapa’a store looks out over the ocean, and is located in a historical area of the town. It carries a wide variety of Birkenstock footwear, including sandals, shoes and clogs.
Birkenstock footwear is made in Germany, distributed by Birkenstock Footprint Sandals, Inc., in California, and sold through independently owned retailers. Birkenstock footwear is well known for its comfortable fit and contoured cork footbed.
Naturally Birkenstock is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day but Sunday, and can be reached at 822-3627.
