To Kaua’i’s many avid baseball fans, the ‘Ghost Players,’ in the hit movie “Field of Dreams” were true heroes that we wish we could personally meet and learn from. Guess what? The Ghost Players are coming to Kaua’i in May and are inviting everyone on the island with or without a love of baseball to come to their open house at the Pacific Missile Range Facility.
The Ghost Players, who appeared from the Iowa cornfield, are soon to materialize out of Barking Sands, and will play on the PMRF’s baseball field.
This unprecedented event allows the Ghost Players to share their wholesome, family-oriented magic on Friday, May 4, beginning at 5 p.m.
These goodwill ambassadors are former collegiate and semi-pro baseball players, and will instruct children ages 5-14 in the many fundamentals of baseball at the two-hour Youth Fantasy Clinic from 5-7 p.m. Following the clinic, the Ghost Players will re-enact their entrance from the cornfield that will lead into a hysterical baseball comedy show coined “The Greatest Show On Dirt” with participants being hand-picked from the crowd.
After the 50-minute comedy routine, there will be an opening ceremony and a seven-inning softball game between the Ghost Players and PMRF’s active-duty personnel. A free autograph signing with all the players will immediately follow the game.
Additionally, the community is welcome to watch the movie “Field of Dreams” at PMRF’s outdoor theater following the game. Parents are highly encouraged to have their children bring their glove to PMRF and arrive by 4:45 p.m. for the clinic. The entire open house is free. Please do not bring alcoholic beverages. Lawn chairs and blankets are encouraged, since seating is limited. And do not forget your camera for that rare photograph with a Ghost Player.
The Ghost Players have appeared before hundreds of thousands of people in the United States, Europe and Asia as well as Chicago’s Comiskey Park and minor league stadiums throughout the United States. A few times each summer, they still perform this entire routine before thousands at the actual field of dreams in Dyersville, Iowa.
To access the PMRF ball field, head west on Kaumuali’i Highway and turn left at mile-marker 30. Once you get through the security gate, signs will be posted to direct you to the ball field.
