Despite a plea for mercy, a 19-year-old Kaua’i mother has been sentenced to
two years in prison for drug offenses.
“I want to apologize for all I’ve done. I don’t want to continue down the
path that I’ve brought myself to,” Kimberly Reyes said Tuesday in Fifth
Circuit Court.
Her attorney, public defender Ed Acoba, told Judge Clifford Nakea that
Reyes “is a very young individual caught up in a life of drugs. She has a
lot of potential. Please consider her” for less jail time.
But Kaua’i County deputy prosecutor Shaylene Iseri-Carvalho disagreed. She
pointed out that Reyes had already been in rehabilitation programs on the
island.
“She was arrested in the presence of her 11-month-old son. It is clear that
the court has given her an opportunity to quit” drugs, Iseri-Carvalho said.
Nakea, noting Reyes violated the terms of her supervised release, told her,
“It’s possible we gave you more responsibility than you could handle.”
Nakea said a 30-month sentence sought by the prosecutor’s office was too
much time. But he also didn’t feel that one year, asked for by Reyes
attorney, was enough. On the charge of promoting a dangerous drug
(methamphetamine) in the third degree, Nakea sentenced her to two years,
with credit for time served.
Nakea combined the sentences on related drug charges by allowing Reyes to
serve them concurrently, which means she will be eligible for parole in two
years.
