Day 10
On April 5, Hawaii’s 13,000 public school teachers and 3,200 public university faculty members walked off the job after failing to reach an agreement on salary talks with Gov. Ben Cayetano. By initiating the strike, Hawai’i has become the first state to have union workers shut down its entire public-education system.

Representatives from the state and HSTA said the negotiations were progressing, especially now that state negotiators are no longer dividing time between the two labor disputes. “There’s only one issue left, which is salary, so that’s what we’re talking about,” said the union’s executive
director Joan Husted.

All classes at the UH’s 10
campuses were to resume
Thursday, with some restarting earlier after Tuesday’s late-night settlement of the faculty strike. That strike had kept more than 40,000 college students out of classes. “We’re very pleased with the results,” Gov. Ben Cayetano said of the faculty settlement.
