On April 5, Hawaii’s 13,000 public school teachers and 3,200 public university faculty members walked off the job after failing to reach an agreement on salary talks with Gov. Ben Cayetano.
In observance of Good Friday, both unions planned to suspend picketing today and the Department of
Education and the University of Hawai’i system has closed all schools to students and employees,
as it would have even if there were no strike.
HSTA News
Bob Chase, president of the National
Education Association, will address civic and business leaders about the nation’s perspective on the Hawai’i teachers strike.
His address will be held April 16 at 7:30 a.m. at the Pacific Club in Honolulu.
After his speech, Chase is scheduled to tour several O’ahu public schools, and then address a groups of UH professors.
UHPA News
Hundreds of UHPA faculty joined HSTA members in staging a joint rally at the Capitol Thursday. Some 500 UH faculty and student supporters marched from the Capitol to the federal building, where the federally mediated talks were being held.
Teachers also presented state legislators with apples and thanked them for a tentative decision to fund the union
members’ salary increases.
