At the Kaua’i County Council’s public hearing about proposed rate hikes for Kaua’i Transit, only one rider boarded the conversational bus.
Joseph Misuraca, who identified himself as a regular user of the system, said if bus fees are increased 50 cents per trip, beefing up of services should follow.
“I’m not an accountant, but if fares are increased, can’t service be extended?” he asked.
Misuraca said he want airport pickups, Sunday morning service for church attendees, and at least one weeknight of service to Kukui Grove Center.
Fares are proposed to go up 50 cents per ride. Monthly passes, now offered at various prices, would under the new legislation be $20 with unlimited use.
The county’s executive on transportation, Janine Rapozo, was in the audience Wednesday but wasn’t called on to comment.
No one else spoke and the council passed the issue on for later consideration.
Rapozo has said previously that rate increases are necessary because the bus system, begun after Hurricane Iniki, has been federally funded. But those funds are drying up, she said.
