Former 49er will play softball game Sunday in Lihu’e
Jerry Rice has spent 16 years battling in the National Football League. He holds the mark for most all-time touchdowns with 176 and he has caught nearly 20,000 yards worth of passes from some of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
He led the San Francisco 49ers to 12 NFC West titles and three Super Bowl victories. He was voted the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XXIII and has been elected to play in 12 Pro Bowl games, making him no stranger to the tropics of Hawai’i.
Now he’s slated to return to the state for a more noble cause. Rice, along with some of his San Francisco buddies began touring the state Thursday and will continue to do so until Monday, April 9, playing various kinds of games in the name of charity.
Sunday, Rice and his crew will play Team Hawai’i in a softball game at Vidinha Stadium at 2 p.m.
The Jerry Rice 127 Foundation has as its goal the hope of raising money for Hawai’i’s children’s charities. The foundation, who professes it wants “to help children be all they can be,” has helped raise money for the March of Dimes of the Pacific, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui, Easter Seals Hawai’i, Imua Rehab, Friends of the Children’s Advocacy Center of West Hawai’i, the Hawai’i Hotel Association Visitor Industry Charity Walk-Kaua’i and others.
Slated to join Rice on Kaua’i Sunday are pro football players J.J. Stokes, Fred Beasley, Garrison Hearst, Sean Dawkins, Greg Comella, Amani Toomer and Jesse Sapolu.
Ready to go for Team Hawai’i is a list of local celebrities and athletes. Last year’s list included June Jones, Artie Wilson, Russ Francis, Ron Mizutani, Howard Dashefsky, Tim Shepard, Kalia McGee and Erin Galloway.
Tickets are $20 and all proceeds go to the charities right here on Kaua’i.
In addition to the softball game on Kaua’i, the squads were scheduled to play softball on Oahu Thursday at 7 p.m. at Rainbow Stadium. Then it was off to Maui for a basketball game at 6 p.m. Friday at Maui High School. Saturday the teams were to hit the court again for a game at Kealakehe High School on the Big Island.
