A 15-year-old Kaua’i girl won her age-group competition in the Boys and Girls Clubs of America national fitness championships Saturday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Sharlene Carrillo of Waimea, a sophomore at Kapa’a High School, finished well ahead of the other girls in her 14-15 age group in the fitness contests, which included sit-ups, pushups, jump rope and running events.
She received a trophy and $125 gift certificate from Sports Authority, a co-sponsor of the program. The trophies were presented by Hawaii’s Angela Perez Baraquio, the reigning Miss America.
Baraquio, a former physical education teacher at Honolulu’s Holy Family Catholic Academy, spoke to the contestants on the importance of physical fitness and goal setting.
Carrillo says she participates in cross-country, track, volleyball and basketball at Kapa’a High and plans to play sports in college. She said she plans to major in zoology in college and work with animals.
Carrillo placed third in the Honolulu competition, which qualified her for the regional competition in Phoenix, which she won. More than 10,000 youngsters participated in the fitness program.
