Meeting sets table for health grants
An informational meeting next Tuesday in Lihu’e will help launch applications for grants for funding community anti-tobacco and other health-related programs.
The meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Lihu’e Public Library. Mary Jo Sweeney can be contacted at 241-3427 for additional information.
Grants from the Healthy Hawai’i Initiative and the state Department of Health are available for efforts in tobacco abuse prevention, nutrition or promotion of physical activity. Requests for proposals can be made through www.hcf-hawaii.org or 1-888-731-3863.
Hawai’i is one of 46 states sharing a multi-million-dollar settlement from a lawsuit against the tobacco industry. Hawaii’s Legislature set aside 60 percent of the state’s portion of settlement money to improve public health and target tobacco use.
The Department of Health created the Health Hawai’i Initiative to encourage healthy lifestyles.

The applications would be for a four-year term now filled by Randall Yoshida, whose current term will expire June 30. He’s eligible for reappointment.
The commission investigates complaints against state legislators, registered lobbyists of the Legislature and state employees. Judges are not overseen by the commission, governed instead by the Commission on Judicial Conduct.
Applications, which must be submitted by April 20, are available from the Judiciary Web site (www.state.hi.us/jud) or Judiciary Public Affairs Office, Room 206-C, Ali`iolani Hale, 417 S. King St., Honolulu, HI 96813.
