Adult league tennis action is opening again soon. Men’s and Women’s Tennis Summer League action begins in May. There will be a rating clinic Sunday, April 1 at 2 p.m., at the Poipu Kai Tennis Club. Interested parties should contact Ed Renalter at 635-2571 if in need of a rating for the leagues. Team captains and co-captains meet on May 6 to discuss the summer leagues.
That’s not the only adult tennis action coming soon, however. The Poipu Kai Tennis Championships, an annual Adult Class tournament, will be held at Poipu Kai Tennis Club April 13-15. Events include men’s and women’s singles and doubles in classes 2.5 to 5.0. Participation in these events will count toward state and national rankings. Entry fee is $20 per person. Deadline for entry is April 6 at 6 p.m. For more information, call 742-8706.
Here are the results of March 17-18 action in the Kaua’i District of the United States Tennis Association Hawai’i Pacific Region Adult Mixed League.
In 6.0 matches, Hana Hou held off the Hurricanes, winning 2 of 3. Calvin Francisco and Rebecca Harismindy beat Bruce Schultz and Yolanda Bartolome 7-6, 6-3; then Nathan Kawaguchi and Nancy Bud rebounded for a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 victory over Andrew and Sharon Vea. Rhandy Esteban and Mary Jane Salacup sealed the win with a 6-0, 6-3 defeat of Mart Gerwitz and Maurizia Zanin.
Sudden Impact got by So What in 7.0 action. Chris Webster and Joyce Yamase pounded Rick Hanna and Marvis Kerr 7-5, 6-2; Andre Zina and Tammy Quinlan won 6-3, 6-4 over Charlie Fulk and Rosemary Smythe; and Sid Francisco and Midi Yamanaka locked out Terry Hooey and Hattie Sommerville 6-4, 6-2
In 8.0 matches, the Goonies defeated Tsunami and will represent Kaua’i in the Hawai’i sectionals. Gaitano Stromberg and Loutoa Zoller washed out Chris Webster and Paulette Lum 6-4, 6-4; Ed Renalter and Susan Ham Young were bested 1-6, 6-7 by Scott Olpin and Val Reckward; and Calvin Lalin and Carol Surratt splashed out Ryan Dostal and Hattie Sommerville 6-3, 6-1.
