Team pulls out win over Lihu’e A’s to stay perfect
There was drama at Wailua Field last Saturday, March 10. The top two teams in the Kaua’i Senior Citizens Softball League met to determine who would have the early season edge in the standings.
When the dust settled, the Rookies had defeated the Lihu’e A’s 14-10 to move to 3-0 on the year. Lihu’e dropped to 2-1.
More impressive than the win was the way it was orchestrated. Down 10-7 after six innings, the Rookies scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead. Then Archie Fontanila took the mound and shut out the A’s in the bottom half of the inning to seal the win. Fontanila is now 2-0 on the year. Lihu’e’s Joe Brun picked up the loss, his first of the season.
Big sticks for the Rookies were Stan Dela Cruz with a two-run homer and Nelly Mendonca, Dickie Sialana and Charly Caveiro with three hits each. Lihu’e’s Peter Rayno and Ismo Yoshishge got three hits apiece.
Kawaihau 13, K-Makule 4
In a battle between teams at the bottom of the league’s standings, Kawaihau got its first win of the season. Ken Tamashiro got his first win of the season and helped himself at the plate with a three-run homer and two hits. Mamo Matsumura and Lovi Victorino pitched in with three hits each.
Dado Paiste picked up the loss for the K-Makule. Ben Pescador banged a solo home run as part of his two hits. John Tabanair and Lefty and Doric Remata got two hits apiece.
West Kaua’i 12, East Kaua’i 9
Joe Silva picked up his second win in this game, while Walter Silva got his second loss. Danny Manus got a home run and another hit. Frank Bukoski, Mike Floster and “Budda” Reittmeister all earned two hits for West Kaua’i.
Walter Silva and Alex Youn both hit home runs on two hits for East Kaua’i.
