Kusaka’s disaster work earns award
Kaua’i County Mayor Maryanne Kusaka has received a national award for her local work on disaster resistance and prevention.
The Building Disaster Resistant Communities Leadership Award was announced this week by the Federal Emergency Management Agency in Washington, D.C.
FEMA officials noted Kusaka’s support of a property tax exemption for homeowners who build storm-safe rooms and the retrofitting of several buildings on the island so they can serve as emergency shelters.
