Members of the Kaua’i Japanese Cultural Society brought out their collection of dolls and other Girls’ Day artifacts for shoppers at Kukui Grove to admire and learn more about the Hinamatsuri, or Girls’ Day tradition which falls on the third day of the third month. In addition to the exhibits of dolls, caligraphy, sumi-e (charcoal painting), and ikebana floral arrangements, the organization offered hands-on demonstrations on origami, a tea ceremony. A program of songs and Japanese dance occupied the center stage to celebrate young girls on Kaua’i. A similar celebration for boys falls on the fifth day of the fifth month (May 5).
