KAPA’A — Mark Rodrigues displayed a keen sense of timing Thursday morning.
With pro scouts in the crowd, the Kaua’i High School pitcher dominated the opening game of the 19th Annual Ron Martin Baseball tournament. His nine strike outs and 3-for-3 performance at the plate delivered his team a 10-2 victory over Kaimuki.
Part of his offensive onslaught included a three-run home run that set the Kaua’i plate production into motion.
Though asking not to be quoted, one scout in attendance said that Rodrigues possesses considerable talent. He said the 6-foot-1 lefthander has a solid build and is certainly a prospect. The scout also said he was at the tournament to check out another pitcher, St. Joseph’s James Ornaga.
As for the Kaua’i game, Rodrigues picked up the win while freshman Shawn Ogata came on in relief to earn the save.
After three innings, the Red Raiders had staked to a 10-0 advantage, scoring three in the first, two in the second and five in the third. Kaimuki got one back in the bottom of the third and one in the sixth. Kaua’i racked up 13 hits to the Bulldogs’ four.
Red Raiders freshman Alec Reichle was 2-for-2 and scored three times. Junior Scott Serizawa scored twice.
Kaua’i squared off against Oahu Interscholastic Association member Roosevelt Friday at 10 a.m.
