The Waimea boys’ 200-yard medley relay team finished as the seventh fastest in the state Saturday at the Local Motion State Swimming and Diving Championships on Oahu.
The boys, Bo Domingcil, Kaina Makua, Jack Flores and Fred Flores finished the race in a time of 1:49.65. The team had qualified for the event with a 1:55.43. On Friday, the team swam the fifth-fastest preliminary time.
Fred Flores also competed in two individual events at the state championship. His goal going in was to qualify for Saturday’s finals, thus becoming the first individual swimmer from Kaua’i to do so in 10 years. Flores came up just short, however, ending 10th in Friday’s preliminaries of the 50-yard freestyle (23.14) — the top eight make the finals. He finished 18th in the 100-yard free (52.88).
The Kaua’i girls’ 400-freestyle relay team also competed Friday. It finished 17th overall, swimming its event in a time of 4:09.07. The team of Kim Black, Sonya Balmores, Lianne Williams and Amanda Scheppers had qualified in a time of 4:14.75.
