More and more, Hanapepe is looking much like the same team that last year advanced to the state playoffs of the Americans of Japanese Ancestry Baseball League. Last Sunday, Hanapepe cruised by Lihu’e 15-2 in play at Vidinha Stadium. In the second game, Kalaheo crushed Kapa’a 23-5 to keep pace with Hanapepe.
Hanapepe 15, Lihu’e 2
Hanapepe moved to 5-0 in league play with the win. Buddy Taniguchi picked up the win for Hanapepe, limiting Lihu’e to two runs on four hits. He struck out four and walked four in seven innings of work. Hanapepe scored in each of the first four innings.
Big hitters for the team were Dean Nonaka with two doubles, two singles, five RBI and two runs scored; Nolan Albarado with three hits and two RBI; Scott Yamase with three hits and two RBI; Vince Nitta, who singled and scored three runs; and Clifford Matsusaka with a single and two RBI.
Lihu’e got two hits and two runs scored from Dalton Murata. Blaine Tsukayama and Barry Kawamura each got a base hit.
Kalaheo 23, Kapa’a 5
Winless Kapa’a proved no match for Kalaheo. The latter kept pace with Hanapepe in the run for the league title. Liko Pereira pitched four innings, giving up no runs on just five hits in picking up the win. He walked one and struck out one. Reliever Duane Miyasato earned the save.
Kalaheo scored 11 runs on 14 hits in the first two innings to take early control of the game. It ended up with 23 hits for the game. Kaina McCallum slammed a three-run homer, and hit a double and a single for Kalaheo. He drove in five runs and scored four times. Miyasato hit two doubles with four RBI and four runs scored.
Troy Kaneshiro got two hits and scored three times. Scott Serizawa and Kyle Higashi each had three hits. Pereira singled and scored three times. Kalani Bukoski rapped two hits, drove in two runs and scored twice. Casey Oketani had two hits and two RBI. D.J. Higashi and Davies Oshiro each singled and drove in a run.
Kapa’a got two hits and two RBI from Reid Tamura. Jay Gatiuan slammed a double and drove in a run. Allen Mundon hit a triple, a double and a single and scored two runs.
