The Ron Martin Baseball Tournament is returning to Kapa’a for its 19th year from March 1-3. Teams competing for the round-robin championship will be the host Warriors, Kaua’i, Kaimuki, Roosevelt and St. Joseph.
Waimea, traditionally a participant in the tournament, will be playing in an event on Maui during the same time period.
The Red Raiders won the 2000 edition of the Ron Martin tourney, going 4-0 over the three days of competition. They defeated the Warriors for the title.
“It’s a good way for us to start the season,” Kapa’a Athletic Director Dwight Fujii said of the tourney. “It’s always very competitive.”
As for this year’s participants, Kaimuki and Roosevelt qualified for the state tournament last year. St. Joseph also should be quite good.
“Their [St. Joseph’s] coaches called us and asked if we were going to have any pro scouts in attendance,” Fujii said. “I guess they’ve got some prospects over there.
“They should be pretty good.”
Tournament games will be seven innings long or held to a two-hour time limit. The championship will be determined by the best won-loss record over four games of play.
