Sonny Kaleiohi is going to jail because he had a girlfriend.
The problem is, she was two years short of her fourteenth birthday when Kaleiohi consummated their relationship, according to authorities.
The now 21-year-old man admitted that when he was 19, he had sex with a then 12-year-old girl. He pleaded no contest to one count of sexual assault in the second degree Tuesday in Judge Clifford Nakea’s Fifth Circuit courtroom in Lihu’e.
In exchange, three similar counts against the defendant were dropped.
Kaleiohi faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail and a $20,000 fine. He will be sentenced on May 8.
Kaleiohi remains in the Kaua’i Community Correctional Center.
