February 11 was blowout day at Hanapepe Stadium in Americans of Japanese Ancestry baseball action. League-leading Hanapepe had the week off, but Kalaheo and Makaweli put up big numbers in the defending champions place.
Kalaheo 18, Lihu’e 3
Kalaheo’s Kaina McCallum was the story in this one. He hit two home runs — one a grand slam — and a single, while also pitching a complete game, to lead his team to victory. McCallum drove in seven runs.
Kalaheo wasted no time grabbing command of the game. In its half of the first, the home team jumped out to an 11-0 lead. That was compiled through McCallum’s grand slam and Liko Pereira’s homer. The following also nailed base hits and came around to score: Kainoa Santos, Casey Oketani, Palani Bukoski and Duayne Miyasato. Scott Serizawa had two hits and two runs scored in the inning.
Miyasato and Santos each ended the game with a double and a single. Troy Kaneshiro rapped two doubles and scored three times.
Lihu’e pitchers were Scott Oshima, Mikey Cardinez and Barry Kawamura. It’s big hitters were Dave Bukoski (three hits) and Cardinez, Ahren Kaneshiro and Kevin Mercado with two hits apiece.
Makaweli 15, Kapa’a 0
Makaweli racked up its first win of the season behind the arm of veteran pitcher Russell Nakata. In his first start of the year, Nakata gave up just three hits, struck out four and walked just one. Scott Shimabukuro got the save after pitching two innings, allowing just one hit. He struck out one and walked one.
Makaweli’s top batters were: Royce Ijima with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored and Kyule Nakagawa with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Nakata also singled, drove in two runs and scored a run. Riley Shirai singled and drove in a run.
Kapa’a pitchers were Kendersen Caspillo, Owen Koishigawa, Dustin Mundon and Kalani Miyashiro.
Kapa’a’s Tyler Wakuta cranked out a double. Reid Tamura got a hit and Paul Morimoto banged two singles.
