From TGI Reports –
The Kaua’i girls fell 2-1 to Waiakea Friday morning at the 2001 Girls State Soccer Championships on Oahu. The loss followed the Red Raiders’ 3-1 defeat at the hands of Kailua and eliminated them from the tournament.
“We really dominated the whole game today,” Kaua’i head coach Dennis Chan said. “We had more shots on goal, more possession time, more corner kicks. But we couldn’t put the ball in the net.”
The coach’s disappointment was evident, but didn’t run all that deep.
“We are very young,” Chan said. “We only have three seniors on the roster, so it was valuable to get this kind of experience.”
Chan said that Waiakea was able to manage just three shots on goal for the game. By contrast, Kaua’i “got at least eight in the first half alone.”
“That certainly was frustrating,” the coach said. “But the girls played well overall.”
Wednesday, the Red Raiders fell 3-1 to Kailua. It then turned around and gave top-ranked Baldwin all it could handle, losing 5-3 after a battle.
“That says that we can all compete,” Chan said. “Once you get into the tournament anything can happen.”
Amber Santos scored both of the Kaua’i goals. Friday’s came on a penalty kick. Wednesday’s “came on a beautiful effort.”
The sophomore will pace the Red Raiders’ attack in the near future.
“We are young and should be good for the next few years,” Chan said.
