Defending Americans of Japanese Ancestry Baseball champion Hanapepe remains undefeated after a 7-3 victory over Kapa’a Sunday, Feb. 4 at Vidinha Stadium.
Hanapepe pitcher Wendall Nonaka threw a complete game, allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out eight Kapa’a batters and allowed just one walk.
Kapa’a’s Owen Koishigawa picked up the loss in a complete-game pitching effort.
Nonaka helped his own cause from the plate, smacking two hits and driving in two runs. Scott Yamase, Clifford Matsusaka and Levi Maeda got two basehits apiece. Lenn Nitta, Nolan Albarado and Leroy Nonaka each scored two runs. Hanapepe recorded 12 hits total.
Big hitters for Kapa’a were Paul Morimoto with two hits and Robin Lore with two RBI on sacrifice flys.
Kapa’a dropped to 0-3 with the loss.
Kalaheo 22, Makaweli 2
Pitchers Liko Pereira and Kalani Bukoski stifled the Makaweli bats as they led Kalaheo to a crushing win.
Pitchers for Makaweli were Mike Shimatsu, Royce Ijima, Ray Shirai and Scott Shimabukro.
Kalaheo cranked out 23 hits. Duane Miyasato paced the winners with three hits and four runs scored.
Kaina McCallum had two hits and four RBI. Scoring three times for Kalaheo were Scott Serizawa, Jake Oketani, Casey Oketani and Kyle Higashi.
At the end of four innings, Kalaheo had blasted out to a 12-1 lead.
Kalaheo improved to 2-1 on the year, tied with Lihu’e. Makaweli dropped to 0-3, tied with Kapa’a at the bottom of the standings.
Sunday, Lihu’e will take on Kalaheo in the opener at 10 a.m. Makaweli will face Kapa’a in the second game at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at Hanapepe Ball Park.
