Waimea won the consolation championship game at the 2001 Chevron State Softball Championships Saturday.
On a rain-soaked field, the Menehunes defeated Leilehua 1-0 at the University of Hawai’i Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
“The conditions were pretty bad,” Waimea coach Pat Baniaga said. “We were exchanging the ball nearly every other pitch it was so wet.”
Junior Albette Nawai yielded seven hits to Leilehua, but timely precision, and a solid defense behind her, delivered the Menehunes.
“Leilehua had us in some tight situations a couple of times,” Baniaga said. “They had runners on second and third with two outs twice, I think. But we got them to pop out or ground out.”
Meanwhile, Waimea (13-2) managed just three hits, but a timely one from Maka Keamoai in the first inning proved all it needed.
“Erin Castillo was able to get on base,” Baniaga explained. “Then Maka came on and lifted one over the third baseman to allow Erin to score.”
Angel Kaohelaulii and Bridget Louis accounted for the other Waimea hits.
“Hopefully with the state experience we got this year, we’ll be better for next year,” Baniaga said.
